Plaza Comunitaria Sinaloa was founded in 2015 by Julieta Garcia with a vision to address the educational challenges faced by many immigrant adults in the community. After retiring, Julieta dedicated her time to volunteering at community centers where she worked closely with adult and senior immigrants. During this experience, she witnessed firsthand the significant gap in basic education among many Latino immigrants, particularly those who had not had the opportunity to develop literacy skills in their native language.
Motivated by the desire to help close this educational gap, Julieta collaborated with volunteers and educators who shared her vision. Together they created a small literacy initiative designed to help adult learners develop reading and writing skills in Spanish. This early effort became the foundation of what is now Plaza Comunitaria Sinaloa.
What began as a small community literacy program quickly gained recognition through word of mouth. Within the first two years, hundreds of low income immigrants began participating in the program, and partnerships with other community organizations helped expand its reach. The organization formed important collaborations with the Mexican Consulate and the Instituto Nacional de Educación de Adultos, allowing the program to offer structured educational pathways for adult learners.
As the organization grew, additional programs were introduced to meet the evolving needs of the community. English as a Second Language classes were added to support language development and help participants navigate daily life in the United States. GED preparation and citizenship classes were also introduced to provide learners with opportunities to continue their education and pursue long term goals.
Over time, Plaza Comunitaria Sinaloa expanded its services beyond traditional classroom instruction. Workshops addressing topics such as mental health awareness and domestic violence prevention were incorporated to provide participants with resources that support both personal well being and family stability.
Since 2021, the organization has experienced significant growth thanks to the continued support of the community, volunteers, and partner organizations. New collaborations with community colleges and community based organizations have allowed Plaza Comunitaria Sinaloa to expand workforce development programs that help participants build occupational skills and prepare for employment opportunities.
Today, Plaza Comunitaria Sinaloa continues to evolve in response to the needs and priorities of the community it serves. What began as a small literacy program has grown into a multifaceted organization that provides education, workforce development, and community resources to immigrant families seeking greater opportunity.
The journey of Plaza Comunitaria Sinaloa reflects the power of community collaboration and the belief that access to education can transform lives. As the organization continues to grow, it remains committed to creating pathways that support learning, career development, and upward mobility for generations to come.
