2022 Nonprofits of the Year

109 Nonprofits of the Year Honored by their State Legislators

The 109 honorees together offer a picture of the vibrancy and diversity of our sector. They are both large and small organizations, urban and rural, and address a wide range of issues: from food insecurity and climate change, to at-risk youth, arts education, domestic violence, mental health and more.

“Nonprofit organizations play such a critical role in our communities, and the last two years of the pandemic have only served to highlight that,” noted Jan Masaoka, CEO of the California Association of Nonprofits (CalNonprofits), which co-sponsors the awards program with both the state Assembly and Senate Select Committees on the Nonprofit Sector.

The selected nonprofits are being honored at a luncheon on the lawn of the state Capitol, on the day (June 8, 2022) that has been officially proclaimed “California Nonprofits Day” by a resolution authored by Assemblymember Vince Fong (AD 34).

What is California Nonprofit of the Year?

Each year, California Assemblymembers and State Senators are invited to honor a Nonprofit of the Year for their district. Co-sponsored by the Assembly Select Committee on the Nonprofit Sector, the newly formed Senate Select Committee on the Nonprofit Sector, and the California Association of Nonprofits (CalNonprofits), these awards:

  • Bring attention and recognition to outstanding nonprofits — especially in the local press where it often means the most.

  • Collectively illustrate the remarkable diversity and vibrancy of California’s nonprofit community: big and small we touch Californians every day through health clinics, churches, American Legion posts, choral groups, Meals on Wheels, prison reform organizations, wildfire relief organizations, museums, environmental advocacy organizations, and more.

  • Give legislators a way to highlight some types of nonprofits that are often overlooked: all-volunteer organizations and nonprofits based in Black and other communities of color.

Nonprofit honorees strengthen their relationships with legislators and vice versa. As policy advocates, we know that when legislators know nonprofits in their district, they listen more carefully to what nonprofits and the communities they represent need.
